Pro Evolution Soccer 2011

RealGamer

PES 2011 continues the Pro Evolution Soccer revolution that started with last years instalment and delivers a playing experience that long term fans of the franchise are more accustomed to. With all the improvements it easy to say this is the best PES game in years.

Level7.nu

Konami has finally found what they were missing during the last years - the magnificent gameplay. This year the players are smarter, the passes have more freedom and a lot of the game modes has been tweaked to the better. PES is back.

Eurogamer Italy

Although PES 2011 can't yet be defined as the best football game on the market, Konami has done a great job in laying the foundations for what seems to be a new course for the franchise.
90

IGN

Some may prefer FIFA's more studied approach to football realism, but when it comes to pick-up-and-play fun and intensity, PES 2011 gets my vote this year.
90

Game Informer

The Pro Evolution series was known as the franchise that is too old school, too hardcore, and a step behind. I think that's changed, and it's now in better position for itself and the sport as a whole.
90

MondoXbox

PES 2011 marks the beginning of a serious comeback for Konami's soccer with many play modes, an improved gameplay and at last a flawless online multiplayer.

GameTrailers

This year, Pro Evolution Soccer fans are being treated to the best entry the series has seen in quite some time. Ultimately though, the adjustable gameplay is still a bit too arcade-like for simulation fans to take seriously, and the lack of authentic clubs is a deal breaker for many.

Videogameszone.de

The newest edition of the PES franchise is a great soccer simulation with a revamped and very realistic passing system. The defense AI is doing a better job now and goalkeepers are also acting smarter than they used to. However the new AI shows some flaws from time to time as well. The often too pedantic referee decisions were also getting on our nerves on a regular basis. As far as licensed teams are concerned PES 2011 is far behind its rival FIFA Soccer 11.

Official Xbox Magazine

One glaring issue with PES is its lack of licensing. [Jan 2011, p.65]
85

Vandal Online

It is not the best football game, but it is a great football game, and is on the right path to further improvements.
85

Everyeye.it

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is a reboot of the series: pace and reactions had toned down for a boost in realism and the "360 degrees pass" system does a great job in involving the player on the pitch. Unfortunately there's a consistent lack in animation quality that spoils the experience.
85

Digital Chumps

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is a huge achievement over previous years. Konami's developers have seemed to have locked down a solid method to make a really good soccer game.
84

MEGamers

Is it fair to say PES is back? I guess so. One big push next year and this again could be the football title to beat.
83

Play.tm

Player likenesses, meanwhile, have received a significant bump in quality. In the more star-studded leagues, at least. Top stars such as Rooney and cover-star Messi measure up to anything FIFA can offer, though in truth, as with many sports titles, there is a touch of the grotesque about some of the models.
82

Worth Playing

PES has the core experience down, and football purists shouldn't miss a re-creation of the beautiful game as well as it's done here. Unfortunately, everything surrounding the gameplay needs more work before PES can vie for the football gaming crown again.
81

Xbox World Australia

In essence, it's a poor man's FIFA.
81

GameFocus

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is definitely showing signs of improvement over the stagnation of the last few years. There is still a lot more that needs to be done before it can even attempt to take back the soccer-video game crown, but it's not an impossible feat.
80

The Escapist

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is much better to play on the pitch itself than its chief competitor, while the lack of important football licenses and a unimpressive menu interface keep it from being a full package.
80

MS Xbox World

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is not so much an evolution, but a revolution.
80

Gamer.nl

PES 2011 has an eccentric approach of soccer. It's fast, fun and action-loaded. There are some flaws, but it's undeniable: the master of soccer games is back.
80

Official Xbox Magazine UK

So PES steps on FIFA's toes in a massive move forward but in doing so has opened itself up to criticism it could previously dodge thanks to a different take on the game. But for PES to be able step on FIFA's toes yet again after a lengthy drop in form is a big achievement, and one that should please fans and newcomers alike.
80

Telegraph

But it's the first title in years to rekindle a passion I had for the series, the one I had back when I were a lad and Pro Evolution Soccer ruled the football landscape with an iron fist and cheeky grin. Now it's finally back on track.
80

Eurogamer Spain

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is better than the 2010 edition, but it's clear that the formula is a bit dated and Konami is losing the match against EA Sports' FIFA.
80

Total Video Games

Just like that, PES is a contender again. There's still a way to go before it gets back to the levels of addictive playability that kept us hooked half a decade ago but the series finally seems to be finding itself on the current-gen consoles. The identity crisis is over and now PES is well positioned to bring its trademark originality back to footie gaming.
80

GameSpot

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is a comprehensive reboot of the series, offering improved gameplay and a host of great new features.
80

SpazioGames

A good first step for a brand that still needs a lot of improvement to stand by the competitors.
80

XGN

Pro Evolution Soccer received a complete make-over with new modes and gameplay elements. Although not as good as FIFA, Konami has build a foundation that can beat FIFA in the coming years.
80

Gameblog.fr

Putting some difficult years behind, the 2011 edition of PES has become attractive again. But if it's been able to catch up in any way, its more with what was expected from previous editions than with its competitor FIFA. On almost all fronts, except its interface, formation menus, and ball physics, EA's title seems superior. PES remains an excellent football game, and will be loved by many, but like the "Oranje" team of Holland, its latest performance isn't the best ever, especially when compared the other team.
80

Games Master UK

Still a decent - if more arcady - game of football but remains firmly in second place. [Issue#231, p.88]
79

Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

A more arcade-like play and much better than last year. Still a distant second to FIFA, though. [Dec 2010, p.85]
79

IncGamers

An improvement but still lacks the depth and sophistication of FIFA. Fans of the series will be pleased but there's little here that'll sway FIFA fans.
78

Strategy Informer

After a run-and-pass arcade footballer, then pick up PES. Anything else, then FIFA's ahead by a long shot.
75

Console Monster

To conclude, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is a step in the right direction for the series, taking it back towards its roots, though also seeing technical developments to keep up with the FIFA series.
75

Meristation

PES 2011 has, once again, good and bad things; overall, the game has the same problems as these past few years. There are improvements in the manager aspect of the game, as well as new licenses and a Master League online; but while the football is not pure football, all of the new features are meaningless.
75

GameWatcher

After a run-and-pass arcade footballer, then pick up PES. Anything else, then FIFA's ahead by a long shot.
75

Eurogamer

While FIFA 11 may be the better, more polished and controllable simulation of football, in many respects PES 2011 is the more charismatic of the two games. If you're only interested in the finished article then you might want to wait another year for further progress, but in the meantime PES fans can hold their heads high, and fans of the beautiful game are on the road to being spoiled for choice again in light of this encouraging instalment.
70

VideoGamer

PES 2011 is a good game. It's the best version of PES I've played on the Xbox 360 and PS3, and it's a step in the right direction - but it isn't a FIFA beater.
70

Gamekult

After swimming with sharks, Pro Evolution Soccer has undergone a facelift with this new episode, particularly successful, although perfectible, but placed on the right track.
70

1UP

Pro Evo feels more like real soccer, but it doesn't really look like it a lot of the time.
67

Destructoid

Making the density of sports management accessible and fun is no meager feat, but Konami's lackadaisical approach to the nuts and bolts of sports sims -- animation, physics, controls, collision detection, feedback -- hold Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 back.
65

Xbox360Achievements

In attempting to start over and give PES its most substantial revamp in a long time, Konami has given the franchise a much-need shot in the arm. There's a lot more to like here than previous, but PES 2011 still feels like an also-ran that's still in dire need of some additional refinement and some of that old fluid magic that once made PES sheer footballing alchemy.
60

X360 Magazine UK

Feels closer to a good footballing videogame than the series has for a few years now, but crucially still isn't one. [Issue#64, p.86]

Guardian

More generally there is much better access to tactics and strategy, with players able to manipulate their team's position and lineups to an almost Football Manager-style degree.

The gameplay is a lot of fun-despite the slower pace-and the combination of online and off-line options will keep you busy throughout the season.
